I got a new computer with Win 7. I installed my old word 2002 program but find I am not able to open old Write files from Win 3.1 days. Is there any easy way to convert those files to .doc files? Would Open Office be able to read those files?

Windows Write: that's a blast from the past!

You should find that if you use File | Open, select the file and then from the Type drop down, choose 'Recover text from any file' option. That should open your Write files.

Just remember to change that back before you open a Word document, or you might get a rude surprise when Word strips out all the formatting.

Good point. I forgot that setting was 'sticky'. It was resolved in Word 2003 onwards.

    Thank you for your responses.

I found that I could install an older version of MS Office and it runs fine in Win 7. Now I not only can open all of my old files (including the .wri files) but my old Publisher files as well.

All's well that ends well, I guess!
