Flowcharting software?

Having spent what seems almost a lifetime trying to use Word's drawing toolbar to compose some fairly simple flowcharts (about a page of questions in diamond-shaped boxes with yes/no answers, all connected together neatly and moveably, I feel the need for some efficient and uncomplicated Flowcharting Software which would enable me to set up a single-page flowchart and then export it into Word.

Visio is probably far too big and far too expensive. I have come across SmartDraw on a Google search, and it looks like it might do the job.

Has anyone got any comments or recommendations, please?

Re: Flowcharting software?

I frequently use IMSI FreeFlow, I believe I put a link to it here, in Software...

Here it is.

It's not bad, however, you can't export the charts to anything at all. It's stuck in the IMSI FreeFlow format. It's also a little buggy when printing out charts, however, it's very easy to use, and it works well for me, as I just CTRL+PRNT SCRN to grab what I want to add it to word/excel/powerpoint, etc...

HTH!

Re: Flowcharting software?

Thanks for the suggestion, but the ability to export the resulting flowchart into Word is absolutely critical, because it will form part of a large manual (on Welfare Benefits, since you ask!).

Flow Chart Maker is still at COSMI, but it doesn't seem to be possible to download it, and there's no idea of price. Amazon.co.uk are selling it in combination with Forms Maker at

**edited by KT to include hyperlink**
I've used Smart Draw, but for relatively simple charts, it's like using an anvil to crack a peanut - far too powerful. Flow Chart Maker, which used to be at http://www.cosmi.com, suits me just fine, and can export its files into Word, powerpoint, etc.

What? No mention of Visio? John, if it's straight-forward flowcharts you're making, be sure to take a look at MS's Visio. I've been using it for years. You can do some amazing stuff with it -- not just flowcharts.

Funny, I thought I'd mentioned Visio at the start of the second paragraph of my original message......

Re: Flowcharting software?

What version of Word are you using?
There was a free downloadable thingy from Microsoft called Draw 98, that would integrate with Word much like Chart or WordArt. It was about halfway between Word's native drawing tools and Visio (in that you could do dynamic connectors and suchlike, but not all the fancy stuff), I found it quite useful. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be easy to find any more, and also doesn't seem to like installing with Word 2000 (I'm still using 97)...

Re: Flowcharting software?

It's Word97, and searching for Draw98 on Google got me the Microsoft OfficeUpdate URL as the first hit - thanks - I will try it!

On downloading it and trying to run it, it looks as if I had it already, but never knew anything about it It is started from Insert => Picture => New Drawing.
