    I have a document listing 50 odd persons, in four columns - being : #, name, trade status and work schedule

    My problem is, I am often required to alter my manning list, and have to continually change ALL the damned numbers in my # column.

    I need to do one of two things:
    1) work out (be told) how to set some kind of automatic upgrade formula into the # column, or
    2) work out (be told) how to have the names list automatically upgrade into alphabetical order, and in doing, adjust the # numerically to suit:

    I can do this in Excel, but, can it be done in Doc?
    cheers

    Hi Kio,

    You can use a SEQ field to generate the column numbers. To do this:
    . delete the existing column numbers
    . press Ctrl-F9 to create an empty field in your numbering column. The field will look like '{ }'
    . fill in between the field braces so that you end up with {SEQ Column}
    . copy the field to all rows
    . select the whole numbering column and press F9 to update

    For now on if you:
    . insert a row, simple copy & paste the # from any cell containing the SEQ field, then select the whole numbering column and press F9 to update.
    . delete a row, all you need to do is select the whole numbering column and press F9 to update
    Cheers,
