    I have the following setup.
    1) A statistical program (SAS) produces a number of html files containing tabular data. These files have .xls extensions and can be opened by Excel without any problems
    2) I have other xlsx sheets that link to these sheets to produce summary tables.
    3) I have a word document that links to the sheets in 2).

I want to open the Word (docx) document without updating any of the cascading links.

I have all the update link options turned off in Word (I think). However, when I open the Word document it seems to be opening each document in turn, making an audible tone when it finds it can't update the links to the html table, then waiting before going onto the next file. All up, it takes about 5 minutes to open the file. If I have Excel open when this happens, I actually get the messages "This workbook contains one or more links that cannot be updated", where I need to press continue.

    Any suggestions?

Can't you get rid of the problematic links?

Yes, I could, but that defeats the purpose of having them. We anticipate that the statistical tables will be revised in the future - and so so we want to be able to update the dependent tables.

Maybe you could use placeholder files for the ones that aren't there?
