I have a SATA HD (320Gb WD Caviar) which showed some errors in Windows XP. After it was replaced with a new one, the problems were gone.

Now I want to 're-format' and low-level test this HD and maybe 'fix' it again. I've used SpinRite in the past but this time it crashes on me. The disc contents is irrelevant and may be deleted/wiped. I just would like to have a very thorough surface test done to ensure all sectors are readable (and marked if not).

Is there any advanced (freeware) tool that can do this (maybe even WD stuff?)

    Any suggestion would be appreciated

You can search for your model number at WD Support > Downloads > Legacy Internal. Then download the Data Lifeguard diagnostics for that model.
