I'm getting ready to move two XP machines to Win7; one to 32 bit & one to 64 bit. The 32-bit machine is used as the basic external & text machine and has a bunch of collected bits & pieces in it. And will again in the future if I don't plan ahead now. The 64-bit machine is the production device and is not much on the internet and then only for specific downloads & updates, etc. What is the state of play in software which can assure me of just-about-total deletion of crud at uninstall? Thanks Linus

When you do a clean install of Win 7 over XP, you will have a choice early on to actually install directly into the XP partition or reformat the partition before preceding. The install over will create a folder in the new OS called windows.old. This folder does contain the entire old OS from which you can move data into your new OS, while not allowing all the crud into the new OS. I'm not sure using this method will get rid of any nasties hiding in your old OS. To ensure getting all this stuff out, a reformat prior to installing Win 7 should do the trick.

To uninstall old s/w I use Revo Uninstaller. You will find numerous testimonials for this app.

You may get more responses if this post were in the Windows 7 thread.
