An update to the free tool that helps you delete files that are assigned. Download from Unlocker Free Download and Reviews - Fileforum.

Note: the following web site show up as unsafe in IE but I've never had a problem in continuing to it.

From UNLOCKER 1.8.9 BY CEDRICK 'NITCH' COLLOMB:

    "Change Log
    • Unlocker 1.8.9 - 8/3/2010

The rumors of me not working on Unlocker have been greatly exaggerated. I have been very busy with pushing the envelope at work, MBA studies during evenings and week-ends, and life during the time left.

Still, I finally had a little time to address all the reported issues on Unlocker, and Unlocker now supports Windows 7. From a x64 stand point, it took me a couple of hours to get it fully working on my machine. I still have to sign the driver which might require a lot of paperwork, but hopefully it will not take long. For the impatient kind, I can provide alpha versions

Interestingly, now that I have a x64 machine, I had no alternative than to get Unlocker working. Despite the increased number of ersatz, none of them really did the job and I really had a motivation to get Unlocker working.

Finally, I addressed the topic of false positives with Unlocker on my my blog. There is no malware in Unlocker and there will never be. And for the record I am not the only one having similar issues.

      - Fixed bug: Handles should not be missing anymore on Windows7.
      - Fixed bug: Potential conflict with regular explorer use when opening multiple files or other shell extensions such as 7-zip.
      - Fixed bug: UI should now appear properly when done from clean install.
      - Fixed bug: No hangs due to looping junctions should happen anymore.
      - Fixed bug: Deleting junctions will not erase original files anymore.
      - Fixed bug: Managing your computer on Windows 7 will not crash anymore.
      - Fixed bug: Bitmap handles should not leak anymore from the shell extension.
      - Fixed bug: Many other potential sources of bugs and crashes.
      - Improved behavior: When deleting files they will be sent first to the recycle bin if possible, only if not possible more abrasive deletion will be used.
      - Improved behavior: Unlocker can be started directly from the start menu to browse to the desired file or folder.
      - Promotional feature: Added fully optional shortcuts to eBay during the installation. Simply untick "eBay shortcuts" in the choose components page during install if you do not wish to have those."

Thank you Joe, if I had not read your post before installing Unlocker I would surely have stopped the download. The Unsafe notice would have scared me away. The updated version has been installed with no problems.

    Hi Joe :

Any reason as to why you did not recommend the Author's website at
    http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker !? For about 2-3 months starting
late last yr, there was a suspected malware problem with this
program ; just finished going to the Author's Site and the "Warning"
Message that had been there is no longer .

Since I rarely use this program, I still have the "old" v 1.8.5 . And
at 1 time on his Site, the FAQs recommended do NOT activate
"Unlocker Assistant" during Installation, though the latest version
has a slightly different wording . However, he still advises NOT to have
"Unlocker Explorer" run in "silent mode" .

I visited the author's site and I still get the warning in IE8. I ignored the warning, but when I tried to download the latest version, my AV program kicked in and quarantined the download. I had to disable my auto-protect for a few minutes while I downloaded and installed Unlocker.

If you are not sure about a particular download site, you often can find another that you might trust more. For example: Unlocker | Utilities Download | PCWorld. I haven't checked the version numbers to see whether they have the latest.

    Talking

Cedrick Collomb has moved Unlocker to a new site. Here's the new URL: http://www.emptyloop.com/unlocker/. The current version is 1.9.1 available in both 32- and 64-bit versions. This program is a real gem and has saved me hours in enabling me to easily delete files from inside Windows Explorer thanks to its shell extension for that purpose. Used to be I had to boot from the repair shell in the Windows 7 media (Windows PE, also easily installed on a bootable USB drive) but now Unlocker lets me do all that from within my current runtime environments.

    HTH,
    --Ed Tittel--

PS: I like the program so much, I just used PayPal to send Mr. Collomb a $10 donation!
