Can anyone direct me to some general rules or guidelines regarding the use of Indexing in Access? I'm aware that it is useful for fields that are frequently searched, and that there is a sort of bell curve, where setting indices for too many or too few fields reduces performance; but I'm not sure what rules to apply in order to achieve optimal performance.

    Thanks

Here is a Microsoft Knowledgebase article : Creating and Using Indexes. I am not sure that it is a complete answer to your question.

    Thanks, John.

While it probably served mainly to confirm what I already knew, it has given me a few pointers, and I think I'll be selecting my invoices with a bit more confidence that I'm getting it right!

    Cheers
