Mail Merge Main Document Does not ask for Datasour (Word 2000)

I have inherited several word merge documents that I need to maintain. These documents are from several authors, and were originally done in Word 95, 97 and 2000. I use 2000.

When editing the master documents, sometimes I get asked to locate datasource, and sometimes I don't.

How do I set it up to not ask ?

Having to locate the datasource every time I go into the file is annoying, and not really necessary.

TIA

Tools / Mail Merge Helper

Under main document, click Create -- the last option is Restore to normal Word Document. Select that and work your way thru the info boxes.

Chris, I'm not sure, but it sounds more to me like you're either:

a) using a template (w/merge codes)
using a document (w/merge codes)

Once you choose the data source, you want to save the document. If it's a template, you need to open that directly, choose the data source, then save it, close it, use File-New again.

To change the data source when you're NOT prompted, hit Tools-Mailmerge to get the mailmerge helper and change the data source there.

All of the documents I am using are templates with merge codes.

I am unsure from your response how to set this up. What you are saying only works (for me) if the data source is indeed present.

I have a situation where the templates are all on a server. I need to copy them to my hard drive, edit them, and then put them back. I do not have access to all of the data sources, and that is what is causing me great difficulty.

My response "disconnects" the datasource from the Main completely.
