XP Pro SP3. I have a mystery DVD drive that shows up in My Computer. I have 1 drive installed but Device Manager shows 2. I cannot use the real one until I delete the fake one in Device Manager. I not only have to delete it, I have to open properties for the real drive and click each tab and then click OK before the real drive is usable. It will continue working a random amount of time or until I reboot when the fake one shows up again. The fake one is listed in Device Manager as DUJYZYP JCTY3SH SCSI CdRom Device. It always has this description. I have tried a product called Device Remover and anything else I can discover on the 'net but the mystery device always shows up again. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Remove them both in device manager, the real one is bound to come back at bootup.
[edit] you have already done so.

It may also be a software related interaction; What burning software do you use?
Do you have a "virtual drive", Like Alcohol or any other CD emulators.

Uninstal both drives and software emulators, then reboot.

    Google: DVD/CD+emulators

Invest a little time and energy in a well thought out BACKUP regimen and you will have minimal down time, and headache.

Is this a new DVD drive? Some vendors are putting their software on the device that shows up as another CD drive. We bought some LG DVD drives at work last year and the only way to get rid of the phantom drive was to upgrade the firmware. The worst part was that the burner software that was included on the phantom drive wasn't even all that good. CD Burner XP is much better.
