What application is displaying this text? I am guessing that this text is displayed by one of the HP utilities maintains your system and offers suggestions on what to do to "fix" things.

And why is the text hard for you to read (I can read it just fine)? Is it that the text is too light?

Is all of the text in all applications like this (for example, if you browse the web with Internet Explorer), or just in this one?

Peter, the pages in question are from TalkTalk, I have informed them about it but nothing has been done or replied to. They are the same using IE8 or FF

Ah, so this is a specific web site that is showing this text. Yes, in that case, yell at them. I too get frustrated with web sites whose combination of text and background colors makes the text difficult to read. One possibility is to copy/paste the text into Word and change the text to black there, then you can at least read it.

I suspect that there is a way in Firefox, or with some addon to Firefox, to change the stylesheet used and view the text in black. But I haven't researched into that, perhaps someone else knows off-hand. (The Web Developer plugin for Firefox has a "Disable Stylesheets" option which you could use to selectively turn of the styles, you might get luck and hit the one that colors the text.)

I just did a search on Firefox plugin, looks like No Squint might do what you need:

As first impressions dont give a true representaton it has been removed. It caused more trouble no matter what background colour it was set for.
