    Autorun A:?

I know I can setup a diskette to be a boot disk, but can I setup a diskette to Autorun? I've got a macro'd excel file i'd like to start at windows startup, and wonder what you all think might be the best way to do this... <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    Thanks!

If you know the name of the xls, you could always just put it in your Startup menu . . .

The idea is to have it automatically load for a less then proficient user...

    Any ideas?

    Exactly.
Can't you just put a shortcut to "A:BozoUser.xls" in Startup ?
I haven't tried it, but can't see why it shouldn't work.

    Re: Autorun A:?

I wouldn't know how to create it, but could you create a .BAT file that would run in the background from the Startup folder, that would look for a diskette to be inserted into A drive. When inserted, it would then launch the desired file?

Even a VB program could be used...or C++, etc...

Again, don't ask me how... I don't have a clue how to do it... I just fix things (and yes, break them too)...

    Re: Autorun A:?

'fraid that won't work. Floppy drives, unlike CD-ROM's, don't have hardware media detection ability. The drive doesn't know when something is put in it. If the drive don't know, Windows don't know.

That said, you could write a program that regularly tries to access the A drive for files with extentions matching (.xls/.doc/.ppt/.dbs/etc). And if it finds something than open it, and if it finds nothing than discard the error message. All of that can be done with a batch file, but it wouldn't be something you put together in 5 minutes. I reckon it would take me about 2 hours to get it written and debugged. There is lots of help on the web.

The problem there is that floppy drive access typically slows down the whole system. You'd have to schedule the batch file to execute every minute at least. That would be a terrible drag on the system.

    Re: Autorun A:?

I thought about that route, I'm sure I could peice the same sort of thing together in a couple hours, but was wondering if anyone had any better ideas...

It's a shame that Floppies are so common, yet so outdated..

Does anyone know of a good listing of WIN switches? I'm thinking perhaps I can setup the disk as a boot disk, and specify excel.exe to open the file on the A: drive, after everything loads in Windows, the first thing to appear is my wonderous Excel Tutorial Spreadsheet...

I don't know much about making CDs but could you do it that way instead?

    That would be ideal, if I had the technology... <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

The grapevine on my end is very, very small, and the budget is even smaller.. <img src=/S/sigh.gif border=0 alt=sigh width=15 height=15>

    I'll work something out if/when I get time.. <img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15>

    What is your ultimate aim?
Someone slips in a disc, boots up, gets into Windows and automatically your spreadsheet opens?
    Network/standalone/either?
    What OS('s)?

    Re: Autorun A:?

Instead of explaining which file on the diskette this user needs to open, the file opens automatically at startup.

    Standalone systems, running 98SE.

    Thanks!

    Re: Autorun A:?

But, I can setup a batch file relatively simply, so that a user won't have to restart thier machine..

    <img src=/S/bingo.gif border=0 alt=bingo width=15 height=22>

    start.bat:

    ECHO OFF
    ECHO Starting MS Excel...
    C:WINDOWSPROGRA~1MICROS~1OFFICEEXCEL.EXE A:ADVANCED.XLS

If this is run from DOS while 98SE is running, it will spawn the excel window in Windows as if the user opened the file.

    Thanks guys!
