Whenever I boot this Win 7 Pro 64 confuser, I get the message:

“There was a problem starting windeu32.rom. The specified module could not be found” [Rundll window]

I have been saying “OK” and haven’t had any problems so far. BUT it is annoying.

So I tried a recovery from an earlier restore point.

This didn’t work. I got the message:

“System restore failed to extract the file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\sfi.dat from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x800070005)”

I have found the sfi.dat which should probably be sfi.sys as all the other files in that area are also *.sys. I figured that I would just rename it. But am not allowed to do so ‘cos I need to be an administrator. Huh!!.

Went look at “users’ There it shows “owner” as an administrator! There is also a user called ASP.NET Machine Account/Administrator/Password Protected. I think this was set up by the place I got it from.

I’m half convinced that the two messages are related in some way and I am concerned that if I really need to use Recovery it will not do the job because of the sfi.dat.

    Any suggestions appreciated.

I.ve had a look at our win7 ultimate in sys32/drivers for you and can only find

    sffdisk.sys

    sffp_mmc.sys

    sffp_sd.sys

should it be there in the first place?---and what is it?

The ASP.NET is something that is created when you install ASP.framework----possibly from an update---to run certain microsoft programs

You possibly may be able to log in as an administrator using safe mode and do something with the offending file

i,m afraid my computer knowledge stops at this point----sorry!-

Use a tool such as Autoruns for Windows to see what is being started when you boot the system.

Seesfi.dat for a discussion of this file. You are often better off disabling your anti-virus software when attemptin a system restore.

I'll bet you have Comodo which has an sfi.dat file.
In any event, you need to boot in to SAFE Mode and then re-run System Restore.
You'll get a successful Restore now.

BTW for Win7, the best way to get to SAFE Mode is to type < MSCONFIG > in the search box and then click on MSCONFIG when it appears at the top of the box. On the next page, click the BOOT TAB at the top, then "x" SAFE BOOT half way down, then hit OK at the bottom.

(After a successful Restore, don't forget to go back to the MSCONFIG page and remove the check mark for Safe Boot.)
