My HP laptop (Vista 64) suddenly stopped making system sounds.

All other apps make sounds fine, including Windows Media Player,
but, the system sounds such as the mail notification or the startup or shutdown sounds don't.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Re enable them from within the control panel's "Sound".
You can restore them individually or the entire system to default.

I prefer to change the startup and shut down sounds, I don't care much for the system defaults.

Invest a little time and energy in a well thought out BACKUP regimen and you will have minimal down time, and headache.

Build your own system; get everything you want and nothing you don't.
