word 2007 newbie question, with, most likely, an uh-duh answer

I have a word 2003 normal.dot which I put into the word 2007 startup folder and the macros within the document work. But if I go to edit (Alt-F8), the edit button is not active. How do I make the button active?
    Thanks.

You can't edit templates in the startup directory unless you open them directly.

If you want to edit the macros in the template, you need to open the template directly OR have the template active as the Attached Template OR have the template active as the Normal template (located in the User Templates folder).

Personally, I would take the template from the startup directory and open it and save as Normal.dotm into the user templates folder. This assumes that you haven't already customised the Normal.dot? template in that location already.
