    If I'm not a gamer do I need DirectX? The lastest version is 11.

    DirectX 11 comes with Windows 7. If you are running Windows 7 just leave things alone. Although much of the verbage for Directx is about game DirectX is not for games only. See Microsoft DirectX.

    For Windows XP you can download the latest version DirectX 9 from Download details: DirectX End-User Runtime.

    DirectX is used for graphics other then games. Google earth would be one example.

    Since Direct X is used by various apps and sites and generally does not have a down side when kept up to date, it does not hurt to leave it, and when you find something that uses Direct X, you will be disappointed and have to acquire it at that time. As stated, Ditect X is a graphics rendering app that is used many other places than just games.
