Susan Bradley wrote in her Patch Watch newsletter column today (April 22):

"If I find any critical patches between now and May, I plan to put them into the Windows Secrets Lounge Patch Watch forum."

Can anyone tell me where this forum exists? I can't find it anywhere!

    Thanks!

    Hi Susan,

Today I was offered "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467174) 4.3 MB" and I hid it and got the message that Windows was up to date and I then exited. A few minutes later the same update was offered. I have Windows Update set to notify only. Note that I am following your advices so I have not installed this update or the previous one for Visual C++ 2005.

Is this update included in your next column? Why won't it stay hidden?

A "redistributable package" probably is not part of Windows itself. More likely, it is a component of a program you installed. Or tried: sometimes packages designed to install as shared code may be left behind even if you uninstalled the program.

Here is some more information on that update, from the folks at Secunia:

MS Visual Studio MFC Library Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability - 8/30/2010
Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Insecure Library Loading Vulnerability - 9/13/2010

The current patch watch chart is here: http://windowssecrets.com/forums/sho...l=1#post798037

The original announcement (and I think some workarounds) was discussed here: A threat to common ".dll" files hits many apps | Windows Secrets Lounge

    Thanks for the above.

I have just been offered the following (Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - April 2011 KB890830 12.8 MB) even though my update history shows that I downloaded & installed it on April 12th. Has it been modified?

Also I am offered the 6 following which I assume will be addressed in the April 28th WS Newsletter?

Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2492386) Download size: 3.2 MB
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2506928) Download size: 65 KB
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2512715) Download size: 1.0 MB
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2515325) Download size: 1.5 MB
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2522422) Download size: 650 KB
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB982018) Download size: 4.1 MB

    Updates not mentioned

    Hi Susan,

Updates KB2515325 & KB2522422 for Windows 7 x64-based systems do not seem to be mentioned in your WS column today. They were offered to me on May 26th.

    Hello,

    Is anybody monitoring this string?

Is there any advice concerning this past Patch Tuesday, May 10th?

There is advice in the latest newsletter. Remember that the Patch Watch column is part of the paid content. As such, you should not expect it to be published here.

Norm, I believe this is updated every month. I runs once each time downloaded. it is as it states a form of AV tool. You can manually run the tool by typing MRT in the search box and running the MRT tool. See the MS web site for explanations of this tool.

    Joe,

Sorry, I had only checked the table of contents and did not realize that the "deja vu" title was Susan's column. Also, I expected the Patch Chart to be posted in the lounge as it was previously. I see now that link is limited to paid subscribers.

I wonder what the purpose is of this "Patch Watch" thread?

I have just been offered three Windows 7 x64 updates (2545698; 2547666; 2552343) listed as "Important" but when I select each of them it says "Recommended". Also, when I select "More information" for each of them I get a Windows page saying the KB is not found.

Will one of you Seniors please report this to the appropriate person at Microsoft?
