OKay, I know Win2K is dead but I want to try Linux on the box. The computer works normally, Plextor CD/DVD drive. HDD is master on IDE1, CD is master on IDE2. CD is jumpered as master, all drives work correctly. The bios is set for CDROM, C, A, but setting it to E, C, A makes no difference as the bios is not seeing the CD drive during boot and therefore bypasses it. Acts like a DOS level driver is missing somewhere but everything reports as working correctly.

    Hi Phil,

I realize your computer is a little long in the tooth, but perhaps you can still locate an updated BIOS for it, at least more recent than the one you currently have. If so, the BIOS may then detect the CD drive.

Thanks Gerald, hadn't considered that. But, the board is an Abit and I'm not even sure they're still in business. Don't see anything about them and my forum links no longer work. Maybe I could find their old FTP site, worth a shot anyway.
