I am running Windows XP3 on two networked computers. In Word 2003 i have noticed that on both PCs under Tools, Options, General the recently used file list has been reset to 4, rather than the 9 I usually have it set to. How could this have occurred?

This setting is local to each machine unless you have a roaming profile.

    cheers, Paul

I have no idea what a roaming profile is, so I guess I do not have one!! I was just wondering how the number could have been changed from 9 to 4. I certainly did not change it myself.

If you change it back to 9, does it now remember 9 or is it still reverting back to the default 4?

When you say networked, you mean they are home computers that can see each other?
I thought they might be on a corporate network, which may explain the change, but you would have noticed because all your Word/Office settings would have reverted to standard.

    cheers, Paul

    Yes, it remains at 9.

I have a home network with the two PCs able to see each other and share files, printers, etc.

Did any other setting revert to standard?

Unlikely that the registry randomly returned the value to the default, so maybe you pressed something you didn't mean to?

    cheers, Paul

I don't remember inadvertently pressing anything but am prepared to admit the possibility!! What is more intriguing, however, is that it reverted to 4 on both PCs.

Strange that. Do you have a registry cleaner installed? Did you use System Restore or Rollback? Do you have any hyper-active system protection utility that may have blocked the registry change?

Yes. I have used Ccleaner recently, and I have used System Restore but cannot recall exactly when in relation to the resetting of the recently used file number, and no, I do not have any hyperactive system protection utility.

CCleaner is probably the culprit. I've seen it change Office registry settings and have read of many other users experiencing it too.

I never rocommen registry cleaners of any type: they have absolutely no benefit to Windows whatsoever.

I have only used Ccleaner on one PC and yet the file list values reverted to 4 on both PCs. How do you explain that?
