I'm using WinXP with Word 2007. When in Windows Explorer, if I drag a text file (*.txt) to the task bar, wait for Word screen to pop up and drop the file on the Word page, it inserts the filename, rather than opening the file. If I do the same with a a *.doc or *.docx file, the file is inserted at the cursor location. Is this the correct behavior?

What I would like, and am expecting, is for the file to open in a new screen in Word, similar to what happens in Excel 2007.

    Thanks.

I am using Vista and Word 2007. I tried it as you said, and the same thing happens for me. I am guessing that is how it is meant to work.

If opening the txt file in Word is what you want, you could always right click it and select Open With.

And you can make Word the default for text files in that dialog if you want also.

Word assumes that if you drag a file onto a document, you want to embed the file into the document. Using Open With as suggested by Vincenzo probably is the easiest way to work around that.

Try dropping it on the title bar instead of in the document window.

Great tip, it seems to work anywhere outside the document editing window (tool bar, scroll bar, etc.).
