    Read Only (Word2000 SR1 Win NT 4.0 (patch 6))

User created a document and named it. Closed, exited Word. Reopened to make changes to doc - getting the message that the file is locked for editing and choose 'notify' or 'open as read only'. She is the owner of the doc, there are no temporary files. We closed both Word and explorer. The file is still read only.
This is happened to many users since Office 2000 install. Grateful for any ideas/suggestions. TIA

When did you update and run a full virus check on these machines?
What are you using as you virus checker?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Thanks for answering.
We use Norton Corporate AV which is updated regularly and patches applied regularly when users sign on. I'll find out what version on Monday when back to office. I did virus check on one user's normal - sounds as if you'd recommend doing C: drive also?

Here's a wild guess for you (although it actually does have some relation to reality, if slim). Are your users using the close box in the upper right-hand corner to close their documents, or are they clicking on the File menu and choosing Close? Have you tested this? The reason that I'm mentioning this is because we have a problem with people using the close box, then not being able to reopen their documents. However we're using a document management system called Docs Open and think that the problem lies in the integration with Docs and is not related to Word at all. As I said, it's a wild guess, but it's something you might want to test if you're having wide spread problems with documents not closing correctly. Going to the File menu and choosing Close is the only thing that works all the time for us. Using the close box, the toolbar close button or keystrokes have all been known to cause problems. (And, of course, we've had users who have sworn to us that they're using the menu and when someone went and stood over them, they were actually using a toolbar button, so check them out well! <img src=/S/bash.gif border=0 alt=bash width=35 height=39>)

    Hi Patricia,

One thing you mention that may be the cause. Are you/she opening the files from an Exploring window?

If so then it's probably due to a problem in the registered file association. To re-register the file type, exit Word and Outlook (if using Word as the default email editor) and go to Start/Run and run the following command:

    winword /r

This will rebuild the registered file type and the file associations for Word.

    Hi BAM:
They are opening from Word - not Explorer. But I will try the winword/r command.

    Hi DaveA:
FYI: A full scan of the hard drive found no viruses. In meantime am going to try out BAM's suggestion. Will post back. Cheers!
