I had Java JRE version 6.20 installed on another partition other than the system partition. The directory was accidentally deleted by a bad software install of another program. Since then, I cannot reinstall it as it says it is already installed. I also cannot uninstall it. I removed the Java MSI installer packages with Windows Install Cleanup and this did not help. I have also deleted everything I could find related to Java, but could not delete the folder in C:/Program files (x86)/Common files. I have also done a lot of registry cleanup as a number of other directories were also deleted.

When I try to run the manual installer for the same package, it says that it is already installed and gives me the options to reinstall it. When I click on that, an error message comes up saying that this only applies to programs that are already installed.

I had the same issue with my HP printer driver, but it looks like the MS drivers will at least do printing and scans. So I have given up on trying to reinstall those drivers.

Hi, Download JavaRa from http://raproducts.org/ or direct Download Windows Binary (.zip file) which is a small zip file. Unzip it and run it.

Click on remove older versions which cleans up installers and older versions.

Once done click on updates and install latest version.

    Hope this helps,

It removed a number of registry entries, but I still cannot install it. I have tried the stand alone and the online installer and both times it tries to install and then says that it is already installed. When I click on reinstall, an error message comes up saying that that option is only for programs that are alrady installed. Thanks for the idea.

You can try the free version of Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware. It is often successful where other products fail.

Hi, I may be completely off base here but I thought I would add my 2 cents. I had a similar problem a few months ago; it involved not being able to install one update through Windows update and then Java. Your problem with the HP driver and then Java make me wonder if something similar is happening. My solution was to reinstall the Windows Installer Service I tried Method 1: Re-register the Windows Installer but that didnít work; reinstalling the service did. You didnít mention the version of Windows; in my case it was XP with installer version 3.1; Vista uses version 4.

The Revo installer found 2 more registry keys, but that still did not fix the situation. I will try the Windows installer. I am running Windows 7-64 bit, but only want to install the 32 bit version of Java as I am not using IE. Thanks

In the course of your registry cleanup did you examine the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node key also?

Yes, I checked there and in HKCU. It also looks like the Windows installer for me would be version 5.0 which I am having difficullty finding a download link for.

I was able to find an older version of Java 6.19 and it installed correctly. I do not however have a Control panel icon for Java so I cannot go into it and check for an update. It was there, but not working and said I need to set an association and I went there, but am not sure what to use. When I went back to CP, it was gone. Hopefully it will do an update check and do the update.
