In trying to fix an unfixable multimedia problem, I replaced my sound files (with conversation with the HP help people) and now nothing is quite right. Is there a way to reinstall the orginal sound system files without completely reinstalling Vista? I think the system sound files may be added by HP for this particular machine.

By sound files do you mean the audio drivers and are they both for the same device? If so you can try going to the Device Manager and under Sound Video and game controllers, find the audio device and go to properties and under the driver tab there will be a Roll Back Driver button to use to roll back to the previous drivers.

See if this suggestion will help.

If this is a problem that the original wav files are corrupt, perhaps a repair install of Vista would reset the system sound files. Windows Vista Forums shows step by step procedures. Note that if you have sp1 or sp2 installed the procedure to slipstream a DVD for this purpose is linked to the article.
