I can read XLS files by opening the Microsoft Viewer first and then opening the XLS file. Inversely, I cannot go to the file first and open with the the Microsoft XLS viewer. I get an error msg "Not a Windows 32 bit file" Can someone give me a solution or explanation?
    Thanks,

We're going to need some additional information. What version of Excel are you using, and what OS is your PC running? The XLS file format has not changed to any significant degree since Excel 97. Also what version of Excel were the files created in?

The computer that I want to use Microsoft Viewer on does not have excel and that is why I need to use the Microsoft Viewer. The pc runs on XP.
I do not know what version the XLS file is. It is generated elswhere and we go on line to get it.
This question is about the Microsoft EXCEL Viewer?

How are you going to "the file first"?

Check your file associations in Windows Explorer (not Internet Explorer).
In Windows Explorer, go to Tools/Folder Options/View/File Types
If XLS shows in the list ..click it and look below for "Opens With".
What is shown for "Opens With" ? You can change it to Open with EXCEL Viewer.
If XLS is not shown in the list, you can add it. You can add XLS with the "New" button.

I just right click on the XLS file and click on "open with" and choose Microsoft viewer. I then get the error message that it is not a 32 bit application.
Maybe the file was created with a 64 bit system but if so why can I open Microsoft EXCEL Viewer first and then click on the XLS file and it opens ok?
I did check that the file is listed and associated with the Microsoft Viewer.

I can now open EXCEL files with the "Open With" drop down menu.
I downloaded the program again but it would not give me the option where to unpack it to. It installed the program itself in Microsoft Office, down a couple of layers. I had as you mentioned added the XLS extension but could not at the time find the viewer from the brouse button. Microsoft Office is not in the drop down menu even under "OTHER" programs.
I will now try to get it to run on a pc with no Microsoft Office loaded. Wonder where it wil unpack to?
Thanks for the help, I would not have got this far with out it.
    Regards
    Norm
