With a new computer (OS Win 7 Home Premium) we will be installing Outlook 2010. The old computer (OS Win XP Pro) we are using Outlook 2000. What is the best way to get the Outlook data to transfer over without losing contacts and calendar items.

    Thanks,
    Ralph

The PST file formats are different between the two versions so you can't just use the old pst. Make a copy of the old PST file. It contains the email, contacts, & calendar items. Move the copy to the new machine.

See Outlook and Exchange/Windows Messaging Backup and Dual-Boot for a chart containing the locations of the various Outlook files.

When Outlook 2010 is running "Open an Outlook data File". You should be able to drag and drop from the old Outlook 2000 file to the new Outlook 2010 file.
