On Windows 7 Ultimate x63 Desktop, I'm unable to delete an Outlook 2010 item (.msg). The screenshot will go on indefinitely.
The outlook item in question was created by mouse-dragging an item in Outlook to the esktop.
The file extension of the item is .msg as shown in C:\Users\XXX\Deskop..
    Please help. Thanks.

Looks like the file might be in use. Try exiting Outlook, check with Task Manager that it really goes away, and if it doesn't then end the outlook, exe task. Then try deleting the file again.

If Peter's suggestion doesn't work, delete the file from Safemode.

Perhaps rebooting will release the file to allow deletion.

    Hi Ted, Clint & Peter,
    Thanks for your help.
    None of your suggestions succeeded.
A clean install is the only solution, just like most Windows 7 issues.
    Thanks again.

I don't know what 'discovering items' means in this context, and I'm not using Outlook 2010 yet although I have it installed, but in 2007 an operation running in the background such as Copernic Desktop Search can prevent operations in Outlook, such as a routine Personal Files Backup, from running, and causing Outlook. to freeze. This because it is accessing the files.(in spite of the claim that it will only catalog them after two minutes of inactivity). The cure for that is to shut down Copernic Desktop Search or any other active programs that may have a lock on the file, and if it works your problem will be cured with no need to even shut Outlook down. Just check the Show Hidden Icons triangle to see what is going on.

Thanks for sharing your Copernic experience, of which I'm also a licensed user. I didn't encounter any issue with Copernic.
It was an Outlook item such as Appointment (.msg) saved in the Desktop folder.
The Delete failure was caused by the corruption of Permission/Ownership in Folders/Registry.
