Advertisments in separate window (5.5)

Hi

I've started getting advertisements displayed in a separate (small) instance of IE. It happens every time I start IE. It's always an advertisement from an outfit called Bonzi.com. It annoys the hell out of me.

I've tried contacting Bonzi.com, and they claim it's an advertisement put there on their behalf by the site I'm accessing. I've checked this, and the sites concerned deny all knowledge.

Any ideas how I can stop this. Is there a file on my hard drive I could remove, for example?

Thanks
Dale

Try Ad-Aware - now on version 5.62 - to help clear out unwanted Ads.

Hi
AdAware only clears out spyware put on to your system. If it's an annoying pop-up window, use #82 on my web site to stop it (and other pop-ups) dead.
However, Spychecker also informs me that Bonzi Buddy is spyware, but according to AdSearch, not one of the ones Adaware recognises.

I installed Ad-aware, and it's stopped the monkey dead in its tracks. And I've also installed NoAds for good measure.

Thanks to you both for your help

AdAware also works well (so far) under Windows XP.

BTW, if you ever installed BonziBuddy that is what's causing all of these ads. Uninstall BonziBuddy and you should clear this up.

Are these "pop up's" or are they "pop under's" and/or both?

Each require a different toy to stop from opening. Two different scripts.

Also you will find that these are based on which sites use them. I try to stay away from those that have started using them, if I can. I have refused to go to some sites and take my money else where.

Give us, some address's that are giving you problems.

Thanks, Dave

If "pop up" means "has the focus when it appears" and "pop under" means "doesn't have the focus ...", then I think there's a mixture.

AltaVista and Google are examples of sites that trigger the ads.

Hi Dave

-----------------------------------------------------------
I'm confused. I was sure it happened with Google yesterday, but it's possible my memory has failed me. The AltaVista one is 100% definite.

Re: Advertisments in separate window (5.5)

I have an AOL account that has been spam-free for the last five years -- until about 2 months ago. Lately, I've been bombarded with spam (it gets past any of AOL's spam filters) and a host of pop-under ads on many, many websites. Since the traditional, passive, banner ads no longer work they've escalated their tactics. Since they can act with impunity there's nothing to hold them back.

Keep in mind, however, that without those ads and spam our internet access would cost a lot more and a lot of websites would have to change to a subscription model to survive. It's a Catch-22!

My homepage in "Internet options" is "about:blank".

Re: Advertisments in separate window (5.5)

To be honest, I have no idea what "about:blank" is, other than the only time I see it is immediately before an unrequested window pops up.
What happens if you change it to something like "http://www.google.com", or even "http://www.wopr.com/lounge" ?
