I have a program that asks me what version of DirectX I have -- 9,10,or 11, and since I don't, I go to the Microsoft web site; they say the latest version is June 2010. How in the heck does that translate? I couldn't seem to find any straight "Download v9 (or 10, or 11) anywhere.

    Regards,

Type "dxdiag" in the search and then click on it.
For Windows 7 it will be Direct X 11

Clint, yes that's what it gave me. Is that part of the Windows install itself, and therefore I don't install anything "on top of it"?

Yes, that was part of windows and you shouldn't need anything ontop of it unless specifically requested
by some other program or hardware in order to function properly, like a PC game or PCI graphics card.

Some graphics card manufacturers will include a directX version with their drivers. Some games will demand the latest DirctX version.

    What program is asking?
Choose DX11, seeing that is what you actually have.
