Error message on close (Office 2K SR-1, Win2K SR-1)

Ever since I installed Norton Utilities 2002 and had it fix a virus and several other things (sorry, I don't remember what they were - invalid registry entries and the like), Word and Excel display an error message when I close them:

Winword.exe (or Excel.exe) has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created.

This happens after I have saved my work, so nothing is lost but it is a nuisance, especially since creating the error log takes a long time.

A similar problem affects Powerpoint when I close it:

Powerpoint found an error that it can't correct. You should save presentation, quit, and then restart PowerPoint.

Access and Frontpage seem to be OK.

Can anyone tell me how to get rid of these error messages?

Have you tried to reinstall these Office products and/or the complete Office package?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Yup. First I did Repair. Then I did Reinstall. Then I removed Office altogether and reinstalled it from scratch. I still have the problem.

When you uninstalled Office, did you run the eraser that MS has at the Office web page?
It can be found at OFF2000: Utility to Completely Remove Remaining Office CD1 Files and Registry Entries

I did not run that. I have now downloaded the program but it seems like a drastic move. Is there anything else you can suggest before I try it?

No I don't. I have not seen this problem before. Maybe someone else will post something shortly.

Please DO NOT advise anyone to run the eraser that MS has at the Office web page! I have just spent eight or ten agonizing hours reinstalling Windows 2000 and all my applications (and I am not finished yet). After I ran that tool, my Windows 2000 Professional would not boot properly. Fortunately I was able to find a CD from which I could reinstall, so I have all my data, but now I have to reinstall my applications and reapply all my tweaks.

On the bright side, Word 2000 does not exhibit the problematic behavior any more (grin).

Bill I ran the program a little while ago in 98 without any problems. Unfortunately if you want to get rid of Office in its entirety the utility has to be run. Maybe it's a Win2k issue.

Here is how I finally fixed the problem. In Norton 2002 I went to Options / Norton Anti-Virus Options / Miscellaneous and unchecked the entry for Enable Office Plug-In.
