CD ROM plays mujsic but won't load programs

I have a computer that will play cd music, but will not load programs....when I go into the control panel, drive D does not show. I have reloaded the driver using what is in the Windows 95 archives. I do not have a separate driver software and it is not available on the internet. I then replaced the cd rom with a different brand, (memorix) which uses a dos driver if it is not recognized by plug and play ( didn't show up in plug and play)) I now can load software but the memorix cd will not play music. I do not have all the drivers for this computer (video, sound card, etc) so a complete reformate and reinstall of everything is out of the question...any suggestions for the two problems I've experienced would be appreciated! Thanks, JohnL

John, firstly don't be too quick to say that a driver can't be found on the net. It is more likely that you haven't found it yet. If you know the serial or model number type that in at Google and it can be amazing what you can find. if no luck there try http://www.drivershq.com/main_home.html or http://www.driverguide.com. Note that you have to sign up with the latter. No problem it's free and has message boards where you can hunt down old drivers.

Secondly I recommend you hunt down up to date drivers for all of your hardware as this can cure all sorts of ills. No need to go all the way of reformatting etc but it's most important the drivers are up to date.
Good luck

BTW there's also http://www.windrivers.com/.

A question I meant to ask before - when you have a data cd in the first drive does it show up in Windows Explorer or My Computer???

No, when there is data in the CD Rom drive it does not show up in Explorer or My Computer...it's as if the drive does not exist at all....I do not have the Cd's availabe for this computer it is not mine and the friend that I am trying to help purchased it over the internet from PROGEN several years ago and I am told by that they have gone out of business. I'll check the two internet sites you suggested for drivers...any additional suggestions are appreciated. thanks, johnl

Ok John, you may have to go down the manual install path once you've got the drivers. Go to Control Panel and Add Hardware, try the Automatic Search but if that doesn't work then click on Have Disk and point to the location of the new drivers. It should happily see these then see the hardware.
