As one who is about to upgrade to Windows 7, I'm reading too many stories about this KB971033 update - About Windows users who claim that their OS has been identified by Microsoft as non-genuine/pirated, and therefore they cannot receive any updates, although they bought it and successfully activated it. I wonder if maybe I shouldn't have all this headache and just stay with Windows XP...

And who gave Microsoft the permission to make Windows 7 "phone home" every 90 days?

There are numerous unscrupulous person counterfeiting Win 7. Just be sure to purchase your copy from a reputable seller. Then you will not have a problem. Do not think that because a reseller is listed on Google or Amazon that they are reputable. Resellers pay Google and Amazon for the right to show in their search engines. Unscrupulous resellers can pay as easily as reputable resellers. Just take a look at this thread for a buyer that got a reseller's web site from Google and regretted it for a version of MS Office. This happens every day for Win 7 as well.

Well, it is their software, though I may agree with you in principle. XP has had WGA for a long time now so you'll have to go grab a copy of UBUNTU to get away from the genuine validation type stuff.
