I have an ADSL 4-port broadband router. I frequently notice the ethernet light flashing rapidly indicating data transmission or reception even when the PC has been idle for some time. What is this activity? Is it an attempt from outside to gain access to my PC?

    Hi philkiwi,

There are a number of processes and services that will check online for updates, such as Windows Update, your antivirus and antispyware protection, etc. It is normal to see Ethernet indicator activity on your modem/router.

If you have a software firewall, browse through the logs it generates to check the identity of the traffic. You should see quite a bit of normal activity in the logs.
