From Word, press Alt+F11 - does that take you to the Visual Basic editor?

In Word 2007 (not sure about 2010), I believe you do have to check a box in the Options to get the Developer tab on the ribbon.

I've noticed that in the macros dialog of W2007&10, the Edit button is black (not grey) for the document you are in, its template, and normal.dotm. So if your macros are in add-on templates, you'll have to open them to edit the macros.
