I'm running Excel 2003 (11.8) SP3 - Is there a way to insert a symbol within a cell with other data using a shortcut keystroke?

If the Data was to be inserted at a specific position within the existing data yes.
If you want to run it whilst in Edit Mode, then as far a I know the answer is NO, Macros cannot run in Edit Mode.
Willing to be corrected on that though.

There is a round about way of accomplishing this as follows:
Go to "Start" button (lower left corner of your screen), select "All Programs", then "Accessories", "System Tools", and "Character Map".
This will bring up the Character Map box with Arial font as default. If you select a symbol such as the Registered Sign, you will notice
in the bottom right hand corner a Keystroke combination "Alt+0174".
The symbols are limited to only a few, but you may be lucky to find the ones you need. Make a list of those keystrokes and
go to your Excel cell. Type in "ABC", then continue with "Alt+0174", then hit enter. This will show ABC with the registered sign.

Is that what you are looking for in your situation?

My question is; Why do you want to enter the symbol?
Generally speaking it is much easier and faster to create a custom format to control the appearance of the value in the cell.
Actually embedding custom characters cause difficulties if you must do math on the cell contents.

Another round about way to insert a symbol is .....
    Choose Insert/Symbol/"pick symbol"/Insert

    Here is the Registered Sign

Just FYI, macros can run while you are in edit mode (using timers), but you can't trigger them while in edit mode.
