I am using Opera 10.53 on Win XP.
Yes, I know there is a newer version out already.

Before I exit Opera, I DELETE personal data under tools.
I then CLOSE Opera and my HD goes NUTS with the LED steadily blinking so it is almost totally yellow for almost a minute each time.
Periodically I get a message about = Opera.exe is shutting down and I will lose all data if I don't wait. Don't care = click on the box to close.
I did not notice that on my other computers and with earlier versions of Opera.
It is almost like it is clearing out some cache somewhere.
I would have thought that CLEARING THE ENTIRE CACHE in DELETE PERSONAL DATA would take care of that, but it doesn't.

    Any clues ?????????????

    Thanks in advance.

    Original poster here >>>>>>>>>>>>

I have NOTHING else in use in Opera = I use it ONLY for a browser for internet surfing and email on AOL webmail.

In that case - strange, not seen this myself.
Maybe it is "still" deleting the data, or perhaps it could be deleting the cache/cookies for other tabs that you still had open.

    Thinking of flash/video etc. ???

It occurred to me the other night since this HD activity occurs EVERY time I shut down this computer if it could be related to XP PAGING MEMORY.

This computer was given to me not working, and I used the RESTORE partition to get it working.
It is an eMachine 2.9 Ghz and came with 256 MB ram - so it must have been a dog in terms of speed.
    It has XP on it.
Not a power house machine but there IS a place for budget boxes.
I added a stick of 512 RAM to it............so it has a nominal 768 MB ram.
However this computer uses DUAL MEMORY to get full effect, and it does not have a DUAL MEMORY CHIP SET since they are NOT a kit.
I notice that after my normal usage of surfing and emails, I get a LOW ON VIRTUAL MEMORY message EVERY time that XP is INCREASING my PAGING FILE.
I hope to eventually spring for a 2 GB dual memory kit.

COULD this be the cause of the THRASHING of my HD for about a full 30 SECONDS every time I shut down ???????????
The HD light is on STEADY and you can hear the HD thrashing about like it is sweeping out the virtual memory used. ( My imaginiation. )

I have low memory on other older computers but NEVER noticed this kind of HD activity.

    Thanks again in advance.

I think most people assumed from your initial post that you were closing Opera, then waiting for that to complete before shutting down Windows. Can you clarify these two things? Are you just shutting down Windows with Opera being the only thing running, or do you have heavy hard drive activity for both independently?

Sorry for any confusion and for prolonging this problem.

I use this machine to surf the internet and for email daily.
At the end of the day, I delete PRIVATE DATA using TOOLS in Opera.
I then click on the red X to CLOSE Opera.
Immediately the HD goes nuts = HD light stays on ( blinks so fast ) and the thrashing noise persists for about 30 SECONDS.
This is NOT a bad HD noise.
When the HD light returns to normal and the thrashing noise stops or almost stops after about 30 SECONDS >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Then I click on START and SHUT DOWN to close Win XP for the night.

I am convinced now that this has something to do with the LOW MEMORY warning and the INCREASED PAGE FILE SIZE message.

I may try to SHUT DOWN XP after surfing and doing email and BEFORE I get the low memory message to see if the blinking and thrashing happens.

Thanks again to any who have taken the time and effort to post.
If I find a fix, I will post back.

So may not be related to Opera.
Have you checked hard disk capacity and size of page file?

This sounds like pretty normal behavior after a browser is closed. Firefox does the same thing. Both browsers can consume as much as 200-300 MB of RAM under normal usage. I'm certain it's nothing to be concerned about.
