When opening a sort in Excel 2003, (Data/Sort), the header of the first column appears in the 'sort by' dialog box and the box is highlighted and ready to rock and roll with keystrokes; e.g., down arrow will select the second column, etc.

When opening a sort in Excel 2007, (Data/Sort), nothing appears in the sort by column, the column isn't highlighted, and it takes 9 tabs to highlight the field. It's obviously a 'Mac'ification shift from 'keyboard-centric' computing to 'mouse-centric' computing. Is there a setting somewhere that would return the 2003 'sort by' dialog box highlighting, etc. Or maybe a macro?

I started on keypunch machines and remain firmly convinced that, for many if not most things, keystrokes are faster and more efficient. Which is why I run windows on a Mac because Mac Excel is, shall we say, lacking.

Thanks for the help and curmudgeonly yours,

    John

    John,

You're right this is a pain. However, I found a way to cut down your keystrokes. If you first press Shift+Tab then Tab you're in the Sort by box ready to go. A down-arrow will then present the column titles.

These "Improvements" are why I'm sticking with 2003 as my main tool until I can't any longer. 2003 lets me modify/hide menus and many other things I can no longer do or do easily with 2007.

Would someone out there with 2010 please check this out and see how it works there?

thanks for the replies and info. I'll put up with 2007 foibles because I need the extra rows and columns it provides. And the Pivot Table is better.
