srch.dealio removal

My son's computer with Windows XP Pro started today by not accessing the internet from Internet Explorer. Email and all other non http programs will hit the internet OK. I noticed that when trying to hit a web page that the srch.dealio was part of the error message that it was translated to. I uninstalled that from the add/remove programs area,but it didn't go away and still can't hit any web pages. I can ping web pages OK though, so the internet is being found.

Any suggestions? If needed, I guess I can download a program from another computer and put it on a thumbdrive and install that way.

Download from your working computer and install and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware, or Spybot-S&D.

Also...it looks like the SearchSettings folder got deleted as well. When I open up IE it now tries to install searchsettings.msi but it can't find it. Anywhere I can download that file again?

I also looked at that other removal site. The toolbar is gone, but it's still hanging around somewhere.

I have run everything several times now and the system seams to be clean. Had a LOT of junk that it removed. Even got rid of the Search thing through the uninstall program.
However, any http sites still not available.
I can get on the internet via anything non http. Downloads, backups, email all work, but not the web.
Do you want me to attach the hichjackthis log file?

I even just now ran all the security updates and updated to IE 8.
Also, plugged in a Cat5 direct instead of just wireless. Same thing.
I can also ping a web sight with a fast connection, but can't hit any page from IE.

Found it!!!! The proxy server under LAN settings was turned on. I guess by one of the viruses, adware, etc.
All works good now. Phew!

I would consider this garbage software program as "sneakware", that others should be aware of.

Good question. I have no idea as he's always installing stuff. We had a talk about that of course. Showed him how much trouble random installs can be.

Perhaps a general statement would help everybody; and that's the comment that it pays not to just blindly click "install"; and that it's better to click
"custom". More and more "free" software installs toolbars, home pages, etc. unless various boxes are unchecked during the installation process.

As you probably realize, it is undesirable to have 2 antivirus programs
running on a computer ; since you expressed a desire to remove AVG,
perhaps you need to use the "AVG Remover", available at
http://www.avg.com/download-tools . Of course, you have to select
the "correct" version for your computer .

computer ; have you ever read the "old" info about it at

I could never get the AVG to fully uninstall even with that uninstall program. Got it to finally go away though. I'm sure there is stuff still in the registry though. But at least it's working with the internet.
