I've noticed on several occasions that although I have Auto Arrange turned off on my desktop, a new icon will pop up and displace the icons that were originally there. Any idea why this happens in W7? It never happened in XP that I recall. This usually happens when some program or installation places an icon on the desktop.

What is selected as the "Sort" when you right click the desktop?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Win 7..did not work for me. Also strange stuff happening in FAVORITES. In older versions, after saving to a favorites folder that folder remained, so that subsequent saves about the same subject could be saved to same folder. Not so in my version. Any ideas ?? This is one of the HP upgrades for free and HP has no idea what I am talking about.

    Hi Phil,

If your desktop problem is that the desktop icons rearrange themselves to their previous arrangement after a restart or logging off/on, this could be a permissions issue with the registry key. Here is a possible solution:

    1. Terminate Explorer by clicking Start, then right-click on an empty area in the Start menu while holding down the CTRL-SHIFT key combo. This pops up a small window. Click the Exit Explorer option.

    2. Having terminated Windows Explorer, you’ll want to restart it. To do this, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and click on ‘Run Task Manager’. In the Task Manager, choose File|New Task (Run), input ‘Explorer.exe’, then click ‘OK’.

The desktop icons should now stay wherever you've put them when you restart Windows or log off/on.
    Cheers,

You could use DesktopOK, a program which backs up the positions of the shortcut icons on your desktop, and can be used to restore the desktop layout again should anything untoward occur. The instructions for command-line use are in approximate English. I use code like
    Code:
    backup: DesktopOK_Unicode.exe /save /silent layout.dok
    restore: DesktopOK_Unicode.exe /load /silent layout.dok
