    Hello,

I've been using these two DVD burners purchased from newegg.com for about two years.
A few hours ago they stopped working in Windows XP (service pack 3).
I attached the picture from device manager showing the drives with the yellow exclamation marks in device manager.

Note that both DVD burners do work in Linux when I boot into that Operating System.

The model of the DVD burners are:
SAMSUNG 20X DVD±R DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S203B - OEM Newegg Item #: N82E16827151153.

Also note that all I need are the drivers but that Samsung doesn't seem to have the drivers for this. At least I was unable to find them.

If you can offer any advice I'd appreciate it!

    Thank you.

After doing some research it appears that these DVD drives may not have proprietary Samsung drivers. They may be using Windows XP native drivers.

I looked in Device Manager and it said the following drivers are being used for the burners:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\imapi.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\PxHelp20.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\redbook.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\storprop.dll

    1. Could one of those files be corrupt?
    2. How would I fix the file?
    3. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Hi Brian - I have Hitachi drives and they appear to use generic drivers with same filenames as yours, However, I noticed my file version for cdrom.sys is different than yours.Mine includes sp3 within the version number. Did you recently upgrade toi XP SP3?

Here is the pic of mine .....

I tried the following two things to fix the problem. Neither worked:

    1. First, I used the recovery console to replace the following files on my PC but that didn't solve the problem:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\imapi.sys

Unfortunately the other files weren't on the Windows XP Installation Media:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\PxHelp20.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\redbook.sys
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\storprop.dll

    2. Then I booted in safe mode and replaced the file named DRIVER.CAB.
    - in safe mode i uninstalled the DVD Burners from device manager.
    - copied the DRIVER.CAB file to c:\windows\driver cache\i386
    - rebooted
    - logged in
    - XP found the new hardware but after installation they yellow exclamation marks still appeared in device manager.

Strange. Why don't my device driver files say "sp3"? I updated to SP3 but I don't know when I did it. I think I did it several months ago but not sure.

Also strange: I installed SP3 myself and according to Microsoft that means I can uninstall it. But, as you can see from the screenshot below that there is no "remove" option in my "add/remove programs" applet.

Hi Brian - I now notice that your Version for the cdrom.sys is different from your first pic ... it now includes sp2 in the Version number. Do you have all of the Microsoft XP SP3 updates installed?

I am just curious who is the Provider of the other drivers? What are the version #'s of the other drivers?

My driver Provider for PxHelp20.sys is Sonic (see pic below). All other Providers are Microsoft.

It seems there will be a simple fix to get your drives working under XP.

My Add or Remove For XP SP3 is the same as yours .....

    Brian,

You may need to completely remove SP3 and reinstall it again to correct the problems. Check this MS support bulletin for their instructions on safely removing SP3. I have done this before when problems arose after the SP3 update, and it worked for me.

    Much success to you!

Hi Tim - Two things changed between the time I posted that first pic:
    - I used the recovery console to replace the following files on my PC but that didn't solve the problem:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\cdrom.sys
    - When that didn't work I simply reinstalled SP3 again (even though I wasn't able to uninstall it from the Add/Remove applet)

Below is the pic showing all the other driver providers:

Hi Brian - Three of yours are the same as mine. Noted above, cdrom.sys is different. Also, my PxHelp20.sys is a slightly different Version 3.00.90.2

Have you applied all XP updates/patches?

What is the "Date Modified" for your cdrom.sys files. Mine uses the 05/02/2008, I am guessing that yours is using the 04/13/2008.

    Mine are below .....

Thanks. I removed SP3 as per their instructions but the problem remained.

Lucky for me I ghosted my Windows XP install a few months ago. So, I decided to restore that earlier ghosted image I created and now the DVD burners are working fine. And as you can tell by the image below that it is no longer using the pxhelp20.sys driver from Sonic.
