I plugged in a microphone ant tried recording my voice as a test but it didn't record. Why not? I tried it with the mute button on the microphone in both positions, as I don't know which is on or off.
This is windows XP, although I get the same results in Windows 7

A check in the "mute" box means "mute".

Go to "Sounds and Audio" in your Control Panel, then to "Audio" therein and look at the various settings and options. A recording device must be selected and the mic's volume turned up. Also, you might need to find the "Advanced" part of "Open Volume Control" under "Recording" and select a "Mic Boost" option there, if you have one. To get there, I right-click on the speaker beside the date and time in the corner of my screen.

The microphone is probably not happy if it fails on more than one system. Can you borrow a microphone to test?

    cheers, Paul
