Some time in the past year I was trying to modify my power management scheme for the display, hard drives, etc. under the display properties dialog box for power management.
In the process I managed to delete the existing scheme and now don't have any.
I can't add / create a scheme name with properties for power down or anything else.
The fact is, the screensaver works as specified and the monitor powers off sometime later.
But how do I re-enable a scheme with custom settings?
I know, dumb but still... I'd like to do it.
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Ron,

Windows XP comes with several different power schemes from which to choose. Go to Control Panel, and double click Power Options. Click the drop down arrow on the right side of the power schemes bar. You should be able to see several power scheme profiles. Choose one, for example, Portable/Laptop and click the Save As button to rename it to something describing the scheme you have in mind. Then select the setting you want for the monitor, hard disks and System standby. You can also adjust settings on the Advanced, Hibernate, and UPS tabs to your liking and click Apply.

    Well, that's the thing...
Whether I access the Power Options dialog from the Control Panel or the display properties, it shows up blank...
    No presets or anything.
And I can't add to it...

The above can be downloaded as a "regfile" from Kelly's Korner.
I won't post a direct download link to the regfile from here.

    Clint,
Perhaps your command line was for W7.
My XP system shows serveral switches for powercfg, none of which will return the proper response.
No current scheme is found, no new scheme can be created, etc.
I must have really screwed up this process... am I going to have to do a registry tweak?

I've edited my post to include XP. See the link for Kelly's Korner.

    Clint,
OK, now I'm getting warm. Your post is very helpful. An initial look at the default and current user keys says my defaults looks good. My current user is a mess... I've exported them and posted them below. before I actually run Kelly's reg file I'd like to ask you to take a look at this and see if anything hits you. Like, is there a limit to the number of schemes XP can handle before it just shuts down the control panel function...?
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Clint,
I bit the bullet and used your restore reference - it worked!
The built in schemes were restored ... and my two custom schemes were restored as well.
So, the CP functionality sems to be back and I'm very grateful for your help.
    Thanks,
    Ron

    Glad it worked out.
Windows XP does not do non standard, or standard power schemes very well.
