I am starting to get Blue Screens caused by DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE with some regularity.
Maybe one or two a week.
The extended message says KB960884 Stop error when plugging 1394 disks.
I only have one 1394 drive and it is my internal one, so it is not really being unplugged.

The message goes on to say a Hot fix is needed and then warns that "Installing the incorrect hotfix can cause damage to your system."

Does anyone know why this failure is occurring and
should I byte the bullet and install the recommended hotfix?

You can read the MS Knowledge Bulletin here. I gather you do not use an external 1394 (Firewire) hard drive with your system. So I would not use the hotfix.

The following can also generate the DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE message: During shut down of the computer, trying to suspend or resume the computer from sleep mode, or attempting to suspend or resume the system from hibernate mode. Driver conflicts tend to show up during these events.

When you see the BSOD again, write down the entire error message, including any hex code if it lists any. Check Device Manager for any yellow warning symbols on a device. Also check the Event Viewer Windows Logs = Application Log and System Log, for any critical errors listed involving drivers when you recover from the next BSOD.

Check the contents of the C:\Windows\minidump folder to see if a driver error is referenced. Post it in this thread if you can.
