I get error msg: "The changes you requested to the table were not successful because they would create duplicate values in the index, primary key, or relationship. Change the data in the field or fields that contain duplicate data, remove the index, or redefine the index to permit duplicate entries and try again."
when I try to import a .csv file. I googled and could only find reference where there is a problem with autonumbering or an existing table field: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884185
This does not apply as I get the error when importing into Access 2007 a new .csv table.
    Please could you help.

By a new .csv table do you mean that the import process is creating the table, or are you creating an empty table and then importing into it? In any event, it appears that you have duplicates in the data you are trying to import that is causing a unique index to complain. If your data is a relatively small number of records, you might try sorting it in Excel to see what duplication does exist.
