My Windows7 has started loading Windows Explorer as the last thing at Boot up (the Desktop appears and then Explorer) Can anyone advise me how to stop this? Is a way to step through the startup?
    Regards
    David.

Use a tool such as Autoruns for Windows or WhatInStartup - Disable/delete programs at Windows startup to see and manage what is started when you boot the system.

You should look for a program that still has a startup entry but is no longer installed.

Note: Autoruns displays an enormous amount of information. For your purposes you should use the Logon tab in Autoruns.

Why is this thread in Lounge Matters?

Does it not belong in Windows 7?

Sorry if I am in the wrong section - I am a newbe.
Hello Joe I don't know if you can help, I have run Autoruns as you suggested, loged on as Adminstrator - Found the problem as highlighted in the attatched file - but it wont allow me to disable or delite it. I would be grateful if you can advise me?
    Regards
    David.

What's In Startup gives an option to disable a start up app under the File tab I believe. For T/S purposes, msconfig.exe may be even be even easier to use to temporarily stop an app to see if it fixes the problem. The start up tab shows the start up apps. Simply untick then one at a time to see if this solves your problem.

David, my comment was directed at the Mods, who for reasons I fail to understand, no longer seem to move threads to their correct home. However, I digress...

The above suggestions are all well and good but before getting into the complications of Autoruns and the like you should FIRST check the SIMPLEST thing of all and find out whether or not all that has happened is that a shortcut to Explorer has somehow ended up in your Startup folder.

I've not got Windows 7 but to check this in XP you would click:
Start | All Programs | Startup

Anything listed in this location will be run once the PC has finished booting, exactly as you describe in your original post. You can delete anything in this menu by simply right clicking and choosing delete.

Thanks very much - you have pointed me in the correct direction - I spotted one of the Start up folders was a short cut - I deleted it and now all seems to be well. again many thanks.

So where are the Admins then? How come they don't moderate their own playground?

The Lounge operates somewhat differently than in the past. The Admins are not present as much as in other iterations of the Lounge when the Admins were also among the most active posters.

They do. Just as it has always been it sometimes take a while to move a post.

I realise this place works very differently to how it used to work but even so it still surprises me.

When the Admins don't react quickly to something misplaced in an area that they control it gives the impression they are not interested. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they are interested but when
The Admins are not present as much
    and it can
take a while to move a post
it's hard not to arrive at such a conclusion.

    signed, disappointed.
