    I am running XP home edition w/ sp3. Recently my machine has added a step to the boot process without my taking any action for a change. After the bios load and peripheral scan, I get a screen asking me to select the operating system. There are two choices, "default" windows and secondly again "default" windows. if i let the timer run out I get a missing file notice. If I choose the 'top' selection windows starts normally.
    here is a copy of my "boot.ini file:

    [Boot Loader]
    Timeout=15
    Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S="Microsoft W indows XP Home Edition" /

    This is only a minor irritation if I allow the automatic timer controlled function to take place. If this happens I have to hit the 'soft boot' button to rerun the boot process and make sure I use the "up" arrow button to select the top choice for a normal windows boot.
    I tried adding the "default" line command agin in a new boot.ini file but that caused a system lock up that required me to boot with my recovery copy and perform a full recovery of mt system image. Along wait for my experimenting!
    please give me a hint as to correcting this minor problem.
    Thank you,
    Dave Nicholls

    be sure to remove the correct line.... (If it is the top line that you have to select to boot, remove the bottom one.)

    If you do not have a second line, what happens if you issue the following command (from the link above)

    Setting the Default Operating System
    At the command prompt, type:
    Code:
    bootcfg /default /ID#
    Where # specifies the boot entry id in the operating systems section of the BOOT.INI file to be made the default operating system

    and make it #1?

    Code:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
    The above is my boot.ini.

    Here is another link.

    http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/bootini.htm

    It looks like this line:
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
    has been crunched together with the second line on yours.....
