    (Word 2003)

    Hi -

    Downloaded the Pack but when I click on the docx file (sent via email), I see this window:

    [attachment=89844:CompatPackUsageMessage.png]

    I have all the updates.

    Any suggestions?

    My thanks.

    I haven't seen that exact error but what happens if you download the .docx attachment to your desktop and then try to open it from there? sometimes the converter will not work when opening an email attachment within the email. (something to do with the way it accesses that file location)

    (you did install the Compatability Pack download...?)

    Yes - I did download it to Desktop. No soap. And yes, the Comp. Pack does show in Add/Remove programs.

    Thanks for the ideas.

    do you have office 2003 patched up to Service Pack 3?

    That almost looks like compatibility pack does not recognize that you have office 2003 installed and is wanting you to extract the file to the new format using the command line.

    (I use compatibility pack a lot and have never seen that message...)

    According this:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924074/#Issues

    Office 2003 must be at service pack 3.....

    Hi - and yes, I have Service Pack 3 (running Win XP Pro, Version 2002).

    Thank you for your diligence.

    Edited to add: When I drag the file to Word, the File Conversion window opens togibberish. Under 'text encoding' Windows is ticked. Does this tell you anything?

    do you have another file to test? This couldn't be a case of file corruption.....

    [attachment=89842:test.docx]

    Try the above attachment and see if it works.

    (It is just the word "test")

    Thanks for sending the test file. Clever idea, but same gibberish window.

    I will uninstall and reinstall. Thanks much.

    The uninstall/reinstall didn't solve the problem.

    I'll try to get a wiser head than me to help me figure this out.

    Best.

    What I meant was I will try to get someone to look at my PC to see what might be 'holding up' this conversion, NOT that you were not wiser than I!

    That sounds as though it isn't installing correctly at all, or that the DOCX extension has somehow become associated with the installer instead of with Word. If you right-click the DOCX and choose Open With, can you reselect Word as the default program for opening DOCX files?

    Word apparently isn't able to hook in the converter.

    (I assume you have tried restarting Windows, in case there was something that had to be completed post-restart in the installation?)

    Do you have a folder full of files with names like wordcnv.dll, excelcnv.dll, ppcnv.dll here:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12

    Interestingly, the Excel and Word DLLs both appear to have been updated this year. Probably security patches.
