While helping a friend with W7 I deleted several unwanted desktop icons. However, the icons didn't go away -- they no longer functioned (i.e. clicking on them didn't start up anything), but they remained displayed until I refreshed the desktop. Any idea what causes this strange behaviour and how to fix it?

Chuck, if it only happens this one time and the icons disappeared when you refreshed the desktop or rebooted the computer, I would chalk it up to an explorer shell anomaly and not worry about it unless you see a repeat performance.

You might run sfc /scannow just to double check system file integrity.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try the scan the next time I'm at my friends.

I have noticed that the desktop does not always automatically refresh in Windows 7. It is somewhat of a nuisance but I have gotten in the habit of hitting refresh on the desktop when I suspect it is out of sync.
