I want to total a column, selecting only the numbers corresponding to a date in 2010.

This needs me either to say Year(date cell)=2010, or have two criteria as in =SUMIF(<date range>,AND(">40178","<40544"),<values range>)

I cannot get either to work !

I would like to use SUMIF rather than anything involving extra columns if possible. How can I do this ?

    You can use sumproduct:
    =SUMPRODUCT((Year(<date range>)=2010)*<values range>)

IF you have 2007 or 2010 you can also use SUMIFS which is better optimised for the task.
Unfortunately not available in earlier versions.

    Thanks Steve.

I also found you can make up a sort of hybrid criterion such as "<"&Year[cell ref] which is pretty simple once you work out how to do it.
