I have a user who is unable to open Word. I believe what happened is the user left Word open on Friday and when the inactivity monitor forced shutdown of his computer it crashed his Word in an unacceptable way. Now he gets the "Word failed to start correctly" error. It will open in safe mode. If I say no, it won't open. Instead it crashes and asks if I want to restore. If I say yes, it repeatedly crashes infinitely. If I say no, obviously nothing more happens. I tried logged into the computer as a local administrator (it's XP) and ran the defect and repair from there where I could open Word, but that didn't make any difference to the user when I logged back in as him. Next I'm going to try emptying temp files. Is there something else I should look for?

Have you tried deleting his Normal.dot and letting word recreate it?
