Auto increment a list of numbers (Excel 97 SP2)

Am I crazy? When I type in a number into a cell, I thought if I dragged from the handle in the bottom left, excel would copy incrementely. I.e if I type 4186 and then drag down 4 rows Excel would insert 4187, 4188, etc. I think we have lost our settings as this isn't happening.

    Any ideas?

What happens if you hold down the control key while you drag?

You need to select 4185 & 4186, then you can drag as it recognises this as a sequence. Ctrl & drag will work on just 4186 and you could also drag down with the right mouse button - this will give you an option of what you want to do.

Type in 4186 and then drag using the right mouse button. When you release the right button a menu will pop up. Select "Fill with Series" and you should get what you want.
